A large part of them are protected reserves, such as the Great Bukit Barisan Forest Reserve in North Sumatera. Sumatera today is divided into nine provinces: Naggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD), North Sumatera, West Sumatera, Riau and the Riau Archipelago, Jambi, Bengkulu, Bangka-Belitung, Lampung and South Sumatera.
Sumatera is the third biggest island in the archipelago. The massive Bukit Barisan mountain range which runs almost the entire length of the island make up Sumatera’s diverse landscape of dense tropical forests, rugged coastlines, wide sandy beaches, deep gorges and steamy swamps.
Lake Toba is the largest volcanic lake in the world. At 100 km long and 30 km wide, measuring 505 m at its deepest point, it is situated in the middle of the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Surrounded by tall mountains, it cradles the large island of Samosir in its middle.

The islands of Bangka and Belitung, with its rolling hills of green fields and forests, and the nearby islands of Gangga and Talise offer over 25 dive sites with fringing reef slopes and pinnacles carpeted in soft corals. The row of underwater boulder pinnacles that just break the surface here form giant steps underwater.
Nias Island lies about 125 km of west Sumatra Island on the Indian Ocean. It is part of North Sumatra Province. The water surround the island is great for sea activities, such as surfing and scuba diving.
