For centuries, Ambon and its surrounding islands were know as the legendary isles of spice, the world’s only sources of nutmeg, mace and cloves. The region was constantly fought over by the Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese. Today, forts scattered around the islands stand as reminders of the nations’ rivalry over the islands’ control.
